Maryland legislators voted 86-52 in a Nov. 2007 special session to put a slots referendum that would change the state's Constitution on the Nov. 2008 ballot. The Constitution would be amended to add 15,000 slot machines at five locations: Anne Arundel, Cecil, and Worcester Counties, City of Baltimore, and on state property at Rocky Gap Lodge and Golf Resort near Cumberland. Two of the sites are racetracks--Laurel Park in Anne Arundel and Ocean Downs in Worcester. Legislative analysts predict that $650 million a year would be generated for the state. Results of the referendum were 1,444,340 for the amendment and 1,018,047 against. Approval is still needed in the 2009 legislative session.

An Open Letter to the Religious Community
Wednesday, February 09, 2005 - The Maryland General Assembly (select members)

THE MARYLAND GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Annapolis, Maryland 21401-1991

AN OPEN LETTER TO LEADERS OF THE RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY

            We the undersigned Senators and Delegates request that you join us in our strong opposition to slot machines in Maryland.

            While each of us has our own reasons for opposing slots, we appeal to you, the leaders of the religious community, because this is very much a moral and ethical issue.

            The bottom line is that slots undermine the precious values that hold families and societies together. The arrival of slot parlors would:

§         inevitably be accompanied by an increase in a host of social problems, such as gambling addiction, crime, embezzlement, insurance fraud, family break-ups, bankruptcies, and suicides;

§         undermine spiritual life, social relationships and the principles of good government;

§         foster deception and dishonesty and create the illusion that wealth can be obtained without hard work and service to the community.

Please join us in our effort to keep slots out of Maryland. We urge you to educate your congregations on the social problems connected with slots.  Please ask them to write to their senator and delegates to express their concern. Please ask them to write letters to the editor to publish their opposition. Please distribute this letter in your newsletters. Please join us in Annapolis in the weeks to come.

We ask for your help as we work for a just, righteous, and peaceable society.

Please feel free to contact Delegate Peter Franchot at 410-841-3460 or Delegate Curt Anderson at 410-841-3291 for more information.
